CEU Doldrums?

Continuing education is meant to keep nurses’ minds engaged, learning new skills and accumulating knowledge that can enhance our practice. CEUs are one of those things that we simply have to do in order to keep our licenses valid, but they can also be a source of true learning if we find courses that really speak to us and our desire to learn.

That said, CEUs can also feel boring and run-of-the-mill, especially if we’re taking courses that hold little or not interest for us. There are so many choices out there for CEUs, and if we choose wisely, maybe we can actually sometimes enjoy the process.

It Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

If you go to the usual sites in search of CEU courses, you’ll find classes and study guides on arterial blood gases, ECG analysis, wound care and other heavily clinical topics. Now, this is certainly just fine as a source of learning and knowledge, but there are many other options out there if you’ve completely tired of those types of offerings.

Googling terms like “holistic nursing CEUs“, “complementary medicine CEUs for nurses”, or “alternative CEUs for nurses” will deliver many options that are definitely less than run-of-the-mill. Through these searches, you can find courses on subjects like aromatherapy, meditation techniques, color healing, humor and health, creating healing environments, and many other offerings that are quite different from the usual courses you’ll find on mainstream CEU sites.

CEUs With Benefits

These courses, while not necessarily strictly medical or clinical in nature, offer a broader sense of what healing and health can be, and they can be an excellent introduction into ideas, concepts and techniques that the nurse can bring to his or her nursing practice.

Additionally, nurses can readily use these techniques in their own lives in order to improve self-care and decrease the effects of stress and burnout

Remember, CEUs don’t always have to be about patient care; they can also be about self-care. Learning about meditation and relaxation techniques can be just as important as learning about arterial blood gases or vent weaning, even though one may seem more “scientific” than the other.

CEUs can have many benefits, especially if you duck out of the mainstream and delve into the world of CEU offerings that have something different on the docket. If you try any of these courses, please let me know—I’d love to hear about your experience!
